Shelby County Snapshot

Shelby County and our County Seat, Shelbyville, were established in 1821 and named in honor of pioneer leader and former Kentucky Governor, Isaac Shelby. The County is located along the Interstate 74 corridor just 30 minutes southeast of Indianapolis between State Road 9 and State Road 44. Shelbyville, home of "The Golden Bears" is a vibrant, growing community of approximately 18,000 residents, with a total population estimated at 44,000 in the County. Shelbyville is located approximately 18 minutes northwest of the new Honda Civic assembly plant now underway in Decatur County.

With our proximity to Indianapolis and Cincinnati, Shelby County offers access to the conveniences and resources of a large metropolitan area while providing superior quality of life in a small-town setting. We pride ourselves on being a safe community of well-kept homes, shops, schools, parks and progressive government. Major local employers include Knauf Industries, Ryobi Die Casting USA, PK USA, Inc; and Atlas Cold Storage.
